In Dunfermline District, Youth Shaped Scouting means our members plan, lead and influence the adventures they take part in.

It started with Baden-Powell in 1907, and it is still at the heart of what we do. When young people learn to share ideas, make decisions and lead their peers, they build skills that last a lifetime.

How can we be more Youth Shaped?

Chances are, you are already more Youth Shaped than you think.

Our role as volunteers is to help young people develop the skills to give it a go. That means welcoming diverse views, embracing new ideas and building trust between young people and adults. As confidence grows, you can:

Provide accessible, inclusive ways for them to plan their own programme.
Encourage them to lead parts of that programme.
Empower them to share their thoughts so decisions focus on what is best for them.

Why is being Youth Shaped important?

Scouting is a movement by and for young people.

Every young person in Dunfermline District has so much to offer. By supporting Youth Shaped Scouting, volunteers help young people build skills they need to succeed — amplifying their voices and giving them a platform to grow into tomorrow’s leaders.

Tips for your section

Practical ways to make your programme more Youth Shaped.

Create an ideas box so people can submit suggestions, including anonymously
Run smaller group discussions so quieter members can share more easily
Let young people come up with and vote on activity ideas, including trips and camps
Ask for feedback after activities — for example scoring them out of 10
Support youth leads and young leaders in your area
Run sessions created and led by young people, individually or in groups
Let different members choose the games you play
Invite them to design their dream term or camp programme
Offer different ways to share ideas — stickers, writing, drawing and talking
Feed back what you will do with their suggestions and how their ideas will be used
